About Atikokan Atikokan, located just a few miles north of the Canada - Minnesota border, was named for the Atikokan River, an Ojibway word meaning "caribou bones". The Canadian N ational Railway, made Atikokan a half way stop between Thunder Bay and Fort Frances and the town was named in 1899. Between 1944 and 1980 the town was home to two iron mines (Steep Rock Iron Mines and Caland Ore) and over the years 20,000 miners and office workers worked in town. The population peaked at 7,800.
Atikokan has its own Highway. The Atikokan Business route was created in 1967, shortly after the new Hwy 11 extension to Fort Frances was completed. This business route was unique in that it did not form a complete loop to return to Hwy 11. The highway ended at the Zuke Street intersection, approximately 200 meters north of the Hwy 622 junction. Despite the elimination of most business routes in 1997-1998, the 3.4 Km Atikokan route of Hwy 11B was retained in the provincial highway system.
